Portiuncula
2024
Portiuncula, is an experimental animated film retelling the story of St Francis of Assisi in a kaleidoscope of the most important events of his life. The perpetual motion and the amalgamation of scenes, we called “total composition”, which simulates the effect of being in many places and moments at once. It is something like an animated, moving Christmas nativity scene. The form of the film means that it can be viewed in a looped manner starting from a few minutes, to a time that is really… unlimited. In the background resound the words of the “Incantation of the Sun” by St Francis in its abridged version. The whole is underpinned by an ambient composition by Filip Czaja, which, in the extended version of the film, transcend the meaning of the narration into a relaxing meditation.
The premiere took place on the 28th December 2024 and the film is currently awaiting distribution.

"According to legends, pilgrims returning from the Holy Land built this little church. It is certain that it existed in the 9th century and belonged to the Benedictines. It bore the name of Our Lady of the Angels, in memory of the apparitions and the chants heard here. It was rebuilt and given to St. Francis on the condition that a new monastic community would be established here. Thus the Portiuncula became the cradle of all the Franciscan families. It was here that the poor man of Assisi began his religious work and it was here that he ended his life on the night of October 3, 1226. The Portiuncula is characterized by its outstanding religious, spiritual and artistic qualities - historically unique polychrome exterior and interior." – Herbert Oleschko
